Venezuela has been elected to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child PDF Print E-mail

K1Nueva York, June 29th 2018.- As part of the protocolary acts of the 17th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, held in New York, they began the election of a total of nine independent experts to the Committee of the Rights of the Child.
At the date of the election there were a total of 13 candidates; Palestine, Togo, Bangladesh, Morocco, Monaco, Iceland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Egypt, Barbados, Samoa, Niger, and Venezuela.


In accordance with the rules of procedure of the Convention, in order to be elected, a total of 99 favorable votes were required from the members present and voting in the room.

Venezuela, in the person of Dr. José Ángel Rodríguez, was elected to the Committee on the Rights of the Child with a total of 119 votes, for an additional term of four years, period 2019-2022.

Rodríguez, is currently the Vice president of the Committee of the Rights of the Child, and member of the aforementioned Committee since 2015, after being elected in 2014 with a total of 134 votes, which reflects the implementation of a constant complete policy in defense of children and girls of the Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace.

Venezuela has been a signatory of the Convention of the Rights of the Child since 1990, as well as the two Additional Protocols that exist in the matter.

Chancellor Jorge Arreaza, through his Twitter account @Jaarreaza, celebrated the election of Venezuela and said that "once again the work of Venezuela in the defense of Human Rights in multilateral organizations is recognized. José Ángel Rodríguez, nominated by Venezuela, as Independent Expert to the Committee on the Rights of the Child of the UN, has just been elected in New York. "
